Blimey, Ewan and GAGS agreeing - bring back the Explorers debate quick!

I'll get me coat.

Listen, if we can't disagree we'll pick on someone else. Now, has
anyone ever told you about snipping posts .... :-)

Indeed! I think if Gooders hunted around a few threads they will find that
we 'pick a argument' with almost anyone.

Seriously, GAGS and I generally agree

I'll second that! (Isn't this proof?)

but when we do disagree the
disagrement is deep and fundamental.

The only issue we seem to 'come to blows' on regularly is Explorers and on
most other scouting issues we're often in complete harmonious accord.

Why Explorers? Well I believe it's probably been one of the biggest issues
in Scouting in the UK in the past few years - if not the biggest. It's
certainly the one issue from the programme review that still continues to
ferment vigorous and often heated debate wherever one goes.

Why do Ewan and I often 'clash' over Explorers? Well we both believe that it
is a key area of scouting in the UK and we are passionately committed to
seeing scouting for 14-18 yo yp survive and thrive. (And it's not just Ewan
and I but many other scouters, many of whom regularly join in on the debates
here - Paul, Tom, Dave, Tim, Neil, KIP, Steve, Pete, Eddie, Graham, Simon,
Dave M in the past, etc - sorry if I've missed someone out!)

We both recognise that the transition to Explorers has been difficult and
that along the way a lot of mistakes have been made many of which have had
an impact in our areas in many different ways. What we've both been trying
to do is to work through (or around) these challenges to ensure that we have
Explorer programmes that meet the needs and wishes of our different groups
of yp. Where we sometimes disagree is on the various ways and means of
meeting these various challenges. We both hope that some of our clashes
stimulates debate between others - here and in the wider scouting
community - and that we believe can only be good because it at the very
least gets people thinking about the issues, brings them out into the open,
and gets people talking and doing things. We both recognise there is more
than 'one way to skin a cat', Explorers affects different people, in
different ways, in different places, and by discussing the issues and
(possible) solutions we hopefully engage in spreading those experiences,
thoughts, ideas and possible solutions around scouting. (There are lots of
other people doing much more of the same in many more places.)

We both don't suffer fools gladly and where an issue has arisen due to some
silly actions or ill-conceived thoughts or plain lack of common sense we do
tend to jump in with strong opinions that don't always agree and we'll fight
hard as nails in support of our different views.

But throughout we'll always maintain respect for each other, each others
views, and at the end of the day share a left-handshake.

(Even though we only live about 6/7 roads away from each other - ahem,
they're pretty long roads, e.g. M62! - we've never met in person, but
through our conversations here and by private e-mail he has my total respect
and I admire his scouting work, efforts, well-thought out opinions, and
experience. I think someday I'll have to get into the old chariot and drive
up/down/over to Huddersfield and meet this Explorer nemesis of mine!)

I believe that it is a sign of
our belief in Scouting that we still can discuss things as colleagues
and friends - even after the cross words.

Absolutely 100% with you on that point!

Sadly, not everyone
understands that. :-(

True.
