Googling for lettering there are a lot of companies that offer adhesive
letters, but I'm not sure of their durability in a marine environment. I
did find one site the specialised in registration numbers for barges and
also SSR numbers. A lot of other places do some very big numbers, I
don't want the side of my boat to look like an advert for the small
ships registry!

Anyone able to recommend a company that they've used for SSR adhesive
letters?

I used the same black fablon that I used for my boat's name... Just
genuine
fablon. I cleaned off the hull with a dry cloth (Whilst dried out on the
mud) and applied it, using several of my pinkies to stick the stuff down
and expel the air from underneath.

For the money saved having enough fablon to do the rest of the boats in
the harbour, I still don't think it worth the effort to DIY, especially
when I can have it done without the effort the the company suggested by
Mike.

Thanks for the suggestion, though, I'll keep it in mind should I feel
the need to name/label a whole bunch of stuff.

Oh, I'm sure the SSR number SHOULD be painted onto or carved into the
hull
somewhere visible from outside the boat. Yes, I know that fablon isn't
paint...

The letter from the MCA says "ensure your vessel is marked...", and "it
must be painted on, or fixed...". I read that as vinyl letters are OK.

I wanted to re-do the name on J's transom, which the previous owner had used
a signpainter (at enormous expense). Went to a sign shop that does vinyls
for vans. In 15 mins I had a super name (and port of registry) designed on
their computer. Cost - 20 quid. Not showing any sign of degradation after
3 years.
