Re: Weather Protection

Sailing is all about enjoying and using the elements. Hiding from them not
only defeats the object, but makes using them difficult. Most people learn
to sail in a dinghy. It is the best way as you have to be one with the
boat. You can not be one with the boat hidden in a wheelhouse.
If you don't enjoy the elements don't go out in them. Even in an enclosed
boat you'll hate it and just waste your money and time. Get a video game
instead.

Well, its nice to use the elements (wind actually) and of course it is
pleasant to sit outside in good weather with the wind in your face. But
could it not be a feature of "cruising" sailing boats to have the option of
sheltering from the storm? My friend takes me sailing sometimes and in the
UK it seldom stays dry for more than a few hours. On one occasion after
about 30 minutes the rain started to stream down. Although I could shelter
in the cabin, he had to sit out at the helm for about an hour in the pouring
rain - is this fun? "If you don't enjoy the elements don't go out in them"
says Duncan Heenan. So presumably you have to "enjoy" getting cold and wet
and frozen - sounds like masochism to me.
Sailing is not only about enjoying and using the elements - it is different
things to different people. It is an environmentally benign means of
transport and "cruising" yachtspeople like to go from one place to another
without noise and discomfort of using their engines in the most comfortable
and enjoyable way. What about older and less fit people? would they not
enjoy the experience more if they did not have to suffer? bring on more
weather protection!!!

I would like to take up sailing but there is one thing I don't understand.
Why is it not possible to have weather protection so that you can sail a
boat in a warm cabin without having to sit out in a cockpit and suffer
cold and wind and have to wear expensive protective clothing. I am amazed
that on yachts costing as much as an average house you don't have any
comfortable place to reside when you sail. After all you expect to go out
in a car in the rain and wind wearing indoor clothes and not have to sit
outside in the wind! Or does it have to be like this to make it more of an
"adventure"?
