The key question is how far away the towing vessel was at the time of
the 'request' for the tow. I'd wager it was already on station.
A yacht without an engine would almost certainly need a tow through Hoy
Sound into Stromness.
Must be about 30 years ago I was crewing a 60ft yacht from Brighton to
Mallorca with just one stop at Gib. We lost the engine just before we got
into Gib, couldn't get if fixed so continued for the next 6 days
engineless. We seemed to manage OK, had to economise on interior lights to
save battery capacity. This, of course, was before yachts were loaded with
electrical gizmos. Log was a B&G unit powered by a 9V battery, no VHF
radio, navigation by sextant.........
