I understood that the Forgen 500 could be connected directly to the
batteries. When I do this however it has an effect on other electrical
apparatus. eg it switches the GPS off. Should it not be connected
directly to the battery? I just use a pair of crocodile clips

I wonder if it is some sort of hf interference maybe you could use a
capacitor across the dc wires to dump any ac present but leave the dc
unaffected. Maybe try adding an rf choke in the cable. Of course check
that the Forgen and its wiring is away from the gps. If the gps has an
internal antenna and is inside the cabin that may perhaps weaken the signal
strength enough for external interference to break through.
You may be able to determine by experiment if the problem is cable carried
interference or radiated interference by running the forgen with another
load like a spare battery or a light bulb not electrically connected to the
boat wiring any way. If the interference stops the problem was cable
transmitted if it is still there it is radiated interference. My garbled
suggestions, hopefully someone who knows more will give a better answer.
