A plain on-off switch would also give a functionally better result

Not at all, which is why a push button is normally fitted.

*Why* would you not agree? Presumably the point of a pushbutton is
to protect the pump motor from damage if it runs dry for too long,
in the event that some idiot should be daft enough to switch it on
and leave it on. I say it is wrong to foist such an ergonomically
terrible solution on the sensible majority who are perfectly able
to cope with the discipline of switching on, waiting till the sound
changes, and then switching off.

Indeed for those who do just that, the reaction time should be
quite quick, so the motor will simply not run dry for more than
2 or 3 seconds, if you're still nearby drying yourself off.

But a timer set for 20 seconds, if activated when there's only
5 seconds' worth of water left in the tray, will let the pump run
dry for 15 seconds, which will probably not do too much harm, but
can't be very good for it either.
