My advice would be to book a flotilla holiday in Greec or Turkey first and
you will learn an awfullot of practical stuff.
That's pretty good thinking. If you sign up for a week course in the
UK and you hate it you've no option but to go home. If you go on a
flotilla holiday and hate it you still have (floating) accomodation by
the sea in a warm place. Conversely if he loves it I very much doubt
the OP would be anchored in a balmy paradise wishing he was sailing
about in the fecal matter of countless other boats off Hampshire!
In at the deep end, that's what I say! Sink or swim, kill or cure.
Alternatively there's the Hoseason's/Blakes route:

Thanks for the suggestion but, no, it's got to be 'real' water. I know
the Caledonian canal and if you see a 3" swell it's considered choppy.
FWIW I've sailed all my life and I really have no idea if commiting to
a cruising live-aboard would be a good thing for me, although I
strongly suspect I'd hate it if any of my hobbies became my life. I
don't think the OP will know if it's a good idea 'till he's actually
been living aboard for 3-4 months.
That's fair enough. However I've heard of countless people who do the
things they love for a living: photographers, beekeepers, florists,
horticulturists, to name a few. Some of these people love what they do
and that they get paid for it is icing on the cake.
While this isn't a hobby we're looking to take up, it's a complete
life-change. The 9 to 5, the rat race, the cost of living... in fact,
the *not* living, but existing. We know there can be more to life than
this, we know we're only here once. We want to get off the
merry-go-round. I totally agree that we need to get a lot of experience,
it'd be a very big mistake to jump in without looking, and to burn our
bridges. At the moment, we're looking at five years to pay off the
mortgage and have the funds to enable us to do this. I hope, in that
time, we can get the experience that'll enable us to be able to do this.
Of course, if we can't get over the sea-sickness we'll go to plan B...
we just haven't thought of that yet.
Thank you for your comments.
