A SENIOR crew member of a P&O passenger ferry is due to appear in
court today in connection with the deaths of three sailors who drowned
off the Isle of Wight.

Michael Hubble, 61, of Wine House Lane, Capel-le-Ferne, Folkestone,
Kent, has been charged with three counts of manslaughter by gross
negligence.

The second officer, who worked on the P&O passenger ferry the Pride of
Bilbao, was due to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court this
afternoon.

advertisementThe bodies of James Meaby, 36, Jason Downer, 35, and
Rupert Saunders, 36, were found on August 23 and 24 last year after
their yacht Ouzo left Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, on August 20, to
sail to Devon for the Dartmouth Regatta.

One of Mr Hubble's roles as second officer included the safe
navigation of the 37,000 tonne vessel, which can hold up to 600
vehicles and 2,500 passengers.

So much for life jackets, they were all inflated but all 3 drowned.

Shows what a life jacket without a spray cover for the face is worth.
It also shows what a 406mhz epirb or a waterproof mobile phone/vhf is
worth.
