Re: anchor buoys - are they useless?

I am sure you have all seen the pretty little drawings in the yottie
mags - yacht at anchor, the cable a nice catenary, just tugging at
the tide, with an anchor buoy fixed to the head of the anchor and the
line rising nearly vertical to the anchor buoy bob, bob, bobbing on
the surface.

Whenever I try to do this I usally find that the anchor rotates as it
goes down, twisting the anchor-buoy line round the anchor and the
chain.

The anchor buoy is then useless on 2 counts:

1. - It can't be used for raising a fouled anchor

2. - As the line is so twisted it is much shorter so often the buoy is
submerged so can't been seen and is a hazard to getting wrapped round
props, such as mine when I am retrieving the anchor.

Any ideas on how to get it right, just like the pictures?

Put the buoy down first, then back off a few metres before releasing the
anchor. Works for me, but don't know about a single-hander. I suppose you
could throw the coiled bouy-line and buoy as far forward as possible before
releasing the anchor if the wind was'nt too strong.
