I don't agree that its utterly trivial to keep out of the way of a

perhaps only capable of a couple of knots yourself.
How long have you been sailing and how many have you hit, then? One a
year? Five a year? I'm on zero in ~25 years.
One other possibility that hasn't been mentioned is that the ferry could
well have been changing course at the time, eg to line up with the TSS.
I've been off the nab tower with a large vessel changing course (to pick
up a pilot, as it turned out), and it certainly wasn't simple to decide
where to go and how to keep out of its way.
It's might not be simple to keep totally out of it's way if it changes
course, but to avoid it actually _hitting_ you (or to get some kind of
a radio message/mobile call off if it's actions make collision
ineveitable) is still trivial.
This is a good one 'cos we're really never going to know. Even if they
identify a ship that collided with them we won't ever find out what the
yacht was doing or what actions the crew took, if any.
I say 'if any' because if it was a collision I simply can't believe
they saw it coming. All down below eating with some music on, if you
ask me. (Nothing about, 20 minutes won't hurt will it?) Anything else
requires engine, battery, sailpower and all comms devices (3 mobiles, a
VHF and probably a handheld) to be completely U/S.
Unless there was fog...
