Replacing plexi/perspex/lexan boat windows. Caulking?

Am replacing the four crazed and scratched etc. main saloon windows of
our 30 year old Westerly Tiger.

We have the four windows in their Al. 'frames' removed and once the
actual plastic panes are replaced will refit window frames back into
the boat ourselves.

Each window is about 24 by 11 inches. Will probably use 3/16th Lexan;
slightly more costly than plexi. but supposed to be stronger.

The caulking between the frames and the boat coachhouse is dried up and
crumbly but no actual leaks occurred there at all. They will be
recaulked.

Question/dilemma: No problem getting the material and/or having it cut
to size. Then either paying for having the glazier fit them into the
frames or do it myself.

But the question concerns that the original windows are set into a
moulding or gasket that fits into the 9mm. channel in the window frame.
These original gaskets have cracked and deteriorated and in a few
places allow water, even just rain, to leak from one side of the glass
to the other.

Several glazing companies say it will be just fine to set the new
plastic material into synthetic (silicon) caulking without using any
replacement for the original moulding/gasket. Another glazier does have
some moulding but it's a slightly different size.

So our question is: Has experience been satisfactory using just slicon
caulking to set the plastic boat window panes into the frames then and
trimming off the excess?

Any recommendations/suggestions much apprciated. Terry

.
