Are there any techniques for coiling long lengths of polypropylene
rope (6mm thick) neatly, by hand? Is it even possible?
The prob with coiling long lines is the same wether the far end is
bittered or free, or even if the line be a mic cable or soundman's
snake. As it is coiled, each coil turn imparts a twist to the uncoiled
part, which carbels the uncoiled into a giant wad of knots.
Learning to coil left and right handed (Clockwise and anticlockwise,
with either hand holding the coil) can be a big assist. Do a wad left,
then reverse direction, leaving a bight folded into the coil. This will
minimize the tangle building on the ground, or you can turn the coil
after adding say 10 turns, and continue winding.
Another method leaves the coil in a figure 8 form, by not twisting the
line into a smooth round coil. It looks wild, but behaves, and it can
be thrown well.
Alternatively, while coiling in one direction, every second coil is
reversed with wrist twist, and the loose part does not try to screw
itself like a bag of snakes, leaving the coil in a figure 8, looking
like you did as described above, but all in one figure 8, not a bunch
of figure 8s piled on each other.
You have to play with it to get a feel, it's hard to describe.
You may decide on a favorite method over time. I find it depends on
the line.

Google for "backpacker's coil" or "butterfly coil"
Works well with long climbing ropes.
I'm not too sure about 3-strand nylon, though.
