It could be worth experimenting with a digital bicycle speedometer
costing a 2-5 gb pounds. Some cycle meters have a rev counter and
hours run function and are waterproof, have a built in data battery
that lasts a year, so don't need wiring. There is even a wireless
model. Fit magnet on moving part (flywheel) position sensor nearby.
cool. I wonder what speed they go up to?
The flywheel idles at 500rpm..
lets see. 700mm wheel dia (on my bike), covers about 2.2m per
revolution, so at 500rpm thats 1100m per minute, which is 66km/hr at
idle.. Thats not as bad as I thought, but I dont suppose cheap
bicycle speedos go to 200km/h :)
I fitted a cycle computer to our Bukh. It reads up to 9999 rpm.
Installation was easy. A friend fitted same type to Yamnar single.
Not all cycle computers read in rpm.

The wireless one go quite high, but what do you enter as the wheel
circumference (on a boat!)?
Aldi have wireless bike scomputers at around £16.
