The engine yanmar YSE12 1977 built, the alternator 25A, the drawings
show a regulator in the system, on the boat i dont have one ,it seems
they replaced it with a "battery separator" (which has a rating on it
up to 55A alternator).
The new digital alternator managers/alternator to battery
chargers/alternator boosters/or whatever else they call them would they
be a good thing to install in this system?
Can they be installed without a normal alternator regulator in the
system?
Do i have to remove the separator (which i assume stops the engine
battery from discharging in the domestic, but i m not sure it does
anythign during charging from the alternator,as it seems a quite old
device ,and i dont thing it has a microcomputer or other "borg" thing
inside it..But then again i m no electician so i am propably wrong....)
So whats your idea about this?(just asking for free of charge technical
advise here .......)
Thanks folks ,happy sailing to all.
George
I can not comment on Yanmar specific systems, but although in 77 a Japanese
alternator may well have used a separate moving contact regulator I would
have expected it to fail long ago. If it did, then a replacement alternator
would be likely to have the voltage regulator built inside the case and you
would not find it. Unless the alternator is a very strange beast, running
without any form of regulation for a period would result in very hot,
gassing and water depleted batteries. As you do not mention this we must
assume that either you only run the engine for very short periods or there
is a regulator.
If the battery separator finned or in a case that looks like a solid
aluminium block or like a car's ignition coil. If so it is a blocking diode.
If it clicks as the ignition is turned on OR as the alternator starts to
charge it is a split charge relay (details about the circuits and operation
of these in Electrical notes on the website below). It could be a more
modern electronic unit, but if you have had the boat for a number of years I
doubt it is.
We need to establish exactly what the thing is before we can say if it is
doing anything to regulate the charging voltage. A split charge diode would
have three thick wires on it, one from the alternator main output terminal
and one to each battery positive. A split charge relay would have four
wires, two thick, each running to a battery (or possibly any master
switches), one thin one being a negative and another thin one that may be
connected to the alternator's auxiliary terminal (if it has one). If it is a
simple charge splitter you are unlikely to need to remove it from the
circuit unless whatever electronic gizmo you are fitting has charge
splitting built in.
Your Gizmo sounds awfully like a Sterling unit and all I can say about that
is that the company failed to accurately verbally describe their system
unless you use "amplifier" in a very loose way. In both my and another
person working in this field have concerns over the unit I think you are
referring to related to increasing the voltage at the expense of charging
currant. For alternators much over 5 years old (and modern ones feeding a
diode split system) I think there are advantages in fitting an advanced
alternator controller. My preference is for Adverc and there is a link to
another company at the bottom of the first page on the website - read and
make up your own mind. However it is vital that any system you choose does
more than simply elevate the charging voltage for a fixed period of time, I
would expect the voltage to be pulsed on a no more than 20 minute cycle.
I trust this helps, email on or off group if I can be nay more assistance.
