I'm hoping that one day I shall be a yacht owner, hopefully within a year -
but along with the seemingly large amount to learn (!) I have lots of simple
questions... Hope it's okay to fire them off to the newsgroup every now and
then!

I was wondering how secure is a vessel when left in a marina? Do all yachts
have door/window locks, or a padlock mechanism? If you lived on board,
could you go off for a month or so, leaving your valuables on board without
worry?
Does everyone have alarms - built in, or otherwise?
Do you just rely upon each other and/or the marina security?

How does security in your marina change when you're in the UK vs. other
countries?

Can you (safely) anchor up off the coast - or is this too dangerous (either
due to passing vessels, or due to unwelcome visitors?) If so, how far out
would you have to be?

lots of questions!!! :o) I love the idea of living aboard a yacht, but it's
all just pie-in-the-sky for the moment. However, it's a dream I'd like to
check out for feasibility :o)

This does seem a bit of an odd question for a newcomer to sailing, but
as an indication of security, it's worth bearing in mind that fully
comp insurance for a thirty footer, worth £30k will cost about £200
per year, so things cant be that bad.

We keep our boat in a small south coast marina with no full time
security staff. There have been a few boats broken into and a few
things taken but, touch wood, we have not had a problem.
