Yes I have to put carboard in my 12 that too!!!switches that drain the batteries.
Garmin 12XL GPS receivers do the same.

Doesn't that flatten the internal battery? If so, that's
a Garmin fix isn't it? (Genuine questions as I have a
12XL and have avoided taking the batteries out for this
reason)

Well the good news is all my waypoints are still there, but I found I
actually inadvertently left the batteries in on this occasion and they are
still showing full amazingly. I am puzzled as to why the batteries ok
lasted this time. I wonder if damp got in before somehow? Mine also gets
lost if its left off for a while with or without batteries. I didn't know
there was an internal backup battery my garmin is pretty old now and has
spent a lot of time soaking wet on the weather rail so I will keep my
fingers crossed.
