I'm not sure why this should be as I have a sedentary job (IT support,Hi Didds,
sit a desk all day) so its not that I have been on my feet all day.
It is obviously just down to the way my body is I guess. As an
example, I ran 5.4K last friday evebing on the Heddington relay route
and was about 30 seconds per Km outside of my Kennet kanter 5K pace a
couple of weeks before
so... my question is... is there any training/approach I can take to
improve on this? I have some evening events coming up (relays and a
10K in 3 weeks at Urchfont, Wilts) and want to do as best I can... is
it just a case of running more in the evening to try and beat my body
into getting used to it? Or is there something else I need to be
doing? (aside from sleeping during the day to fool my body into
thinking that 6pm is in fact 10 am!)
I usually run in the morning or lunch time and also have a sedentary
job.
When I do have the opportunity to run in the evening I do two things.
Firstly, I make sure I have a banana about 45 mins before I run (for
me that would be shortly before I leave work) and secondly I make sure
I don't start to unwind mentally too much on the way home so that I am
sort of still in "busy" mode when I get home and will still have the
impetus to change into my running gear and go out. My evening running
sessions are usually when I am home alone which is pretty rare and is
also a time for me to have a whole evening to myself so it would be
easy just to kick back with a glass of wine. Of course once I'm out
running I'm darn happy and I then enjoy my glass of wine a bit later
all the more.
So, I think it's all about being aware of what your body needs fuel
wise and also your mental attitude. Yeah, and you might just need to
accept that evenings are not the best time for you. Your job might be
sedentary, but you must still get tired and infact sitting for much of
the day might make you feel lethargic.
You could also try (especially at this time of year) going out much
later. So, come home, have some dinner, relax and then go out about
9pm. I've never been one for doing that, but it's worth a try just to
see how it goes.
