Re: Race for life

Oh I do too, but your vent should be towards the organisers (which I
can see you are planning on doing by writing to them), rather than the
person helping out on the day.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't rude to the person (or at least I don't think I
was) "incredulous" would probably be the word. The trouble is that when I
got back and checked out the website there really isn't any appropriate way
of contacting the organisers. There is a number listed but I don't
particularly want to call that, and the only e-mail address listed states
something like "this is for sponsorship queries only" It would be easier to
get a refund from Amazon than raise an issue with these guys. I may try the
e-mail address you listed. Failing that I may take them up on one of their
invites to visit the Cambridge labs and take it up with someone in a white
coat (not) ;-)

Indeed, they are just the beneficiaries of the cash, or at least those
whose salaries are being paid out of it are. If you are funded by for eg
the British Heart Foundation you are sent info magazines and encouraged
to get involved, but it is not actually compulsory. I have never been so
funded but have worked in labs with people who were.

In science, money comes from whoever agrees to fund your study (normal
caveats on money with strings, from tobacco companies etc apply). Many
in science look askance at people whose research is little more than
puff for the pharmaceutical companies that fund it. There is a recent
move for authors of papers to have to declare any relevant financial
interests, personal or professional.
