Nope, it was direct into the serial port. I wonder if the whole connector
jobbie is broke, though I notice (from that link you posted) that they can
be bought separately so perhaps I'll try that.
I figured there was some button combination that would do a reset, but I was
already out of doors and on the mountain when it went wrong, so there wasn't
much I could do. Infact, having only scanned the site, most of the reset
combinations involve holding down other keys as you turn on the device, and
of course mine was already on and wouldn't turn off, so perhaps I was always
screwed.
Anyway, excellent link.
Cheers

a couple of points you might find useful Rob. On point (a) are you
using a serial to usb lead? If so sometimes they only work in the port
they were configured in. Don't ask me why, I thought if they're a bus
then they should all be the same but I've had this problem as well and
using the original port fixed it. Failing that try reinstaling the
serial/usb driver.
On your point (d). Had that too. You don't have to let the battery go
flat and indeed sometimes it doesn't cure this if you do, I've heard.
You can however use a couple of reset routines which will fix it. One
is a first try option which retains user data but recovers the unit and
the second restores the unit to default settings. The second option
will fix it but you loose any data you had on it. This link explains
what to do
