(especially about the Boston Marathon woman) it appears the lack of
salt to be _the_ issue here . I wrote at length about this yesterday
in the sports drink thread but had a blue death screen as I pressed
the post button:((. Lack of salt in a normal diet wouldn't be a
problem but the modern preoccupation with low or no sodium diets
leaves the ultra healthy marathon runner at risk.
It would have helped if I'd posted the link correctly the first time but
that really wasn't the conclusion of the concensus statement.
Overconsumption of water was by far and away the biggest factor. (Having
said that 2L per day isn't going to pose any risk of making you
hyponatraemic as it's well within the bounds of what the kidneys can deal
with).
I doubt hyponatraemia is a problem outside of energetic sport -new
babies can suffer from it and there is a lot of medical study on the
net concerning babies. A lot of contributing factors must conspire to
make hyponatraemia a risk - excessive heat , under fitness meaning
extra time on feet , loads too much water and no salt for the previous
days so no stores in the body. Thats how I see it .
Additionally, while some of us in the west may be persuing a "low salt"It was mainly waffle I'm afraid based on limited personal experience .
diet, I'm willing to bet it's still a lot higher in salt than what many
people in Africa are subsisting on. The body is remarkably good at hoarding
sodium when acclimatised.
Shame about the blue screen, I would have liked to have read the rest of
your comments. ;-)
I like to take part - its as near to being a runner as I can be
.
