Exactly, which may be why Ofcom would rather allow sharing of the band.
There has always been a reluctance to spend time and money chasing people, unless there is a
good reason. Can you imagine how much time and money it would take to get stubborn CBers from
the band?
There would certainly need to be a big-money use for the band to make it worth the cost, and
who is going to pay big money for a CB band knowing it will take years to clear the old users
from it?
It is much easier to find a group who are desperate for band space, so desperate that they will
gladly share, and, from a technical knowledge viewpoint, too stupid to see that the band is not
really suitable for that use.
However, a small group of people with rucksacks may have thrown a spanner in the works. The
Government are planning on allowing the use of telephone and Net tapping. All telephone and
Internet goes through a provider, so is easily tapped for information.
Should they really give religious groups a direct link to members, Knowing how difficult it
would be to monitor 40 (or even 80) channels across the whole of the UK 24 hours a
day? They would need to set up special listening stations, staffed 24 hours a day by
multilingual staff.
CADS could be a perfect medium by which extremists can preach their hatred without even needing
the platform of the local mosque, getting to those not attending mosques and maybe even
recruiting from outside the religion.
In the hands of extremists, CADS could be a powerful tool, so I am sure that the Government are
now thinking a bit harder about whether to allow it and, if they do, just how they could
monitor it.
Which is more important, giving a small section of a minority group the right to listen at
home, or protecting the lives of nearly 60 million people?
Regards,
Peter.
