Your argument was that motorists pay the same taxes as everyone
else so have no more 'rights' to use the roads that other
non-rights holding people (ie. pedestrians and horse riders), the
fact is that motorists pay more tax than other road users do via
the VED and petroleum taxes.

On the contrary, it was your argument that cyclists do not pay for the roads
and within that suggestion you have implied that cyclists are in someway
exempt from income tax, CGT, stamp duty, VAT, council tax (not to mention
VED on their cars and fuel tax) as well as the numerous other taxes that
indirectly fund road building and road maintenance.

All I was doing was pointing out that cyclists pay taxes like everyone else,
and the error in this commonly held misconception.

If people choose to run cars that attract higher rates of tax, that is
entirely their choice, but it does not transfer ownership of the road
network to them. They are taxed at higher rates, because they pollute more.

And even of you run the biggest dirtiest fuel guzzling vehicle, it gives no
more rights to use the roads as someone who has made a more environmentally
friendly choice.
