Re: Naturism and skin cancer

As a longtime lurker and occasional naturist I have yet to see any
warning of the suns effects on the naked skin. See todays Daily
Telegraph. My wife (non naturist) insists the damage caused outweighs
the merits of an all over tan. Does the liberal use of factor 20 put
your minds at rest?

Personally I can thank my parents for giving me a genetic makeup that allows me to tan easily. I use moisturisers if I spend all day on a beach but hardly ever feel a need to use a sun screen, and if I do it is never above factor 8.

The human body needs a minimum amount of sun exposure to generate vitamin D. Sun tan is an evolutionary response to sun exposure and should not be confused with skin damage due to sun burn.

The debate continues with strident voices on both sides. Nevertheless the pendulum seems to have started to swing in the other direction. At least one study has suggested that the risks of prostate cancer in men and (I think) breast cancer in women are reduced by sun exposure. And when all forms of cancer are taken into consideration sun exposure results in a net lowering of total risk.

Throw into the this equation mutterings about
- skin ageing (loss of collagen) being independent of sun exposure
- concerns about increasing rates of rickets in young children (vitamin D deficiency)
- possible carcinogens in some sun screens
- the absence of any statistical evidence to suggest that naturists as a group or even outdoor workers as a group are more susceptible to skin cancer

....and the water gets really muddy.
