Common WW2 other ranks gallows humour.
The RAF send the officers out to die.
In the Army it is Other Ranks
and in the Navy they all go down together.
Of note is, while this is common enough gallows type humour from yer lowly
working class scum there is a suggestion that in general the high moral
said to be enjoyed by the Royal Navy during the war was as a direct result
of them all being very equal once the shit started flying. That is what
the wizened old matelots will tell you. Personally I think it that because
they were so pissed on their rum ration they didn't know there was a war
on half the time.
