What more can I do?

About three weeks before Christmas I won an ebay auction for some
Snap-On sockets, nice and cheap they were too. I paid up, they didn't
arrive. Contacted the seller who very fairly refunded me the full
amount and apologised.
Two days ago they arrived, the postage label has been obviously defaced
to hide the send date but on checking the tracking number it was the
same as the seller said it was when wee were trying to find out where
they were in December.
Now, I've contacted the seller to say they've turned up and that I'd
actually like to keep them, so could he let me know how much the
auction ended at so I can deposit the funds into his paypal account,
but he hasn't got back to me yet. I know he applied to Royal Mail for
the insurance up to 25 quid on the lost items, but they aren't lost
now. If I send him dosh, Royal Mail will still come to me for the goods
or the value of what they paid him when they realise they have
delivered.
How do I ensure I don't pay up and then lose the sockets?
