I've just landed myself a cheap telephoto lens...

What did you get?

I was going to post about it somewhere, and here seems as good a
place as any.

Sheltering from a sudden shower in Edinburgh, I stepped into a
branch of Jessops. I'd been thinking it was time to get a
telephoto, but didn't want to splash the cash at the mo, but I
casually looked at what was in the cabinets. A Tamron 70~300 tele
caught my I because it was priced at £34.95. "Why so cheap?", says
I. "Because it's a Pentax fitment, and we don't sell Pentax any
more", says helpful sales chap. "What a stroke of luck", says I,
with my Pentax K200D on my shoulder. I know Tamron are a budget
make, but that price was just too good to resist.

Of course, now I need a bigger camera bag. I was thinking of a
rucksack style bag - anyone care to make any recommendations?

They are a budget make, but can be very sharp - as our Rufus colleague
points out the autofocus speed isn't the fastest, but you can work
around that usually. At the price you can't go wrong - if nothing
else it will do as a lens to show you whether it's worth blowing big
money on a lens to cover that range.

I think I had one in the 1980's so Tamron have been making decent lenses for
a long time. The results you couldn't complain about. The zoom and focus
speeds were rather slow, but it was a manual lens of course and that was a
function of the user ;o)

Looks like Jessops are going to fail unless a white knight comes in. Damn
shame, they are only into the banks for 2 mill. but said banks are ruining
them.
