Tricky coves, the sums to do with flying. Especially as they apply to
summat small where the air is bordering on being a liquid for the
purposes of the math but put simply: downthrust is used to keep the
aircraft flying straight and level[1] through various changes in
airspeed and by and large is used to cover up a whole host of basic
design flaws and build inadequacies.

Rather unusual to find downthrust in an aerobatic design though, which
speaks volumes in very unsavoury terms about the builder.

Side thrust is as described and used to counter both the rolling effects
of propwash induced in the mainplane and to a certain extent also in the
tailplane/fin and even more so in the case of flat bodied high wing
types of flying machine. Also there are torque reaction effects of the
motor to consider.




[1] Where straight and level means is the same direction and attitude as
is was going before you decided to look at where it was going regardless
of whether it is either straight or level from your rather limited
perspective on the ground.
