Yes I'm treating the actual data gathering ("what's on when and where?")
as a separate exercise.  What I wanted was something where I could
design a dynamic, map-viewable route, then add waypoints.  It *seems* as
if Google's "My Maps" could be the answer.

I think you, and Jim, are right. AIUI you can transfer a route on GM
to a GPS, though I've not tried it. You can also, and I have tried
this, transfer GPS data (such as a gpx file e.g. route in Mapsource)
to GM in zoomable form, using this free program.

I plan to use it at the end of our summer holiday to transfer the Zumo
tracking logs to GM so people can see where we've been.

Ah that's really useful, I'll haev to do that for some of the superb
roads we covered last year.

Schweet.  I'm going to buy a bike-friendly Garmin (whichever is current
at the time) sometime just before we go ... I don't really need it for
the TT, since I can find Liverpool pretty easily :)

I can highly recommend the Garmin Zumo, we bought the 550 for our 3
week trip around Europe last year on the KTMs and it was superb. We
did a lot of research too on what roads looked the best courtesy of
Google Earth & himself uploaded all the routes on the Garmin after
seeing where we wanted to stop by. The Garmin coped with torrential
downpours, being poked at with very soggy gloves, rattling around on
the KTM for 3 weeks riding & we covered 3000miles through several
countries. The only complaint we have it that it doesn't always keep
up on smaller roundabouts - i.e. it doesn't refresh quick enough (not
that we're riding too quick, just the refresh rate can be a little
annoying). However it did very well on recalculating the route easily
enough & we've now used it in the car & on the bikes around Europe and
the UK.

It's well worth the money if that helps at all.
