I've noticed that if I switch it quickly off and on again, the channel
comes back, which makes me think it's something internal to the amp.
The Amp is an RA930AX, and is getting on for 20 years old, and was
long ago retired to powering music in my office. But I still use it
quite a lot [1]
Anyway, the question is this - is it likely to be something easy to
fix? Could I possibly fix it myself? Is it worth taking in for
repair? Or should I just go to Richer Sounds and buy their best buy
offering (currently a Cambridge Audio A1 VERSION 3 for 70 quid).
Possibly a dry solder joint - the kind of thing can be cured fairly
simply just by remelting the solder if you can find the problem and if
it is not surface mount. Does it drop in and out if you hit it?
I've no idea what the current costs of getting a professional to repair
such a thing are: probably wouldn't be economically feasible.
Usually it doesn't make economic sense to repair electronics- the skills
needed to do it usually make the labor more expensive than replacement.
But I have found carefully tapping on components with a plastic implement
(e.g. a biro) can be well worth the effort. Failed caps and solder joints
are pretty easy pickings sometimes with this method. There's also freeze
spray and/or a heat gun but simple percussive maintenance is worth a go.
