Are you looking to view system events? The Event Viewer might
be what you are after.

Among other things. I'm actually trying to teach a Windows-owning mate
to keep an eye on his system. He's paranoid. tail is what I'd use here
on my Mac, although it might not be /var/log/messages ('don't recall).

On a Mac, it's /var/log/system.log

On Windows, watching the event viewer is a bit of a waste of time. It
contains a lot more trivial information than /var/log/messages...
