I once interviewed a guy when I was with Honeywell. It was an entry
level position but he had claimed lots of experience in programming
on his CV. When I asked him how he approached testing and
debugging he quite blatantly told me that as he had never actually
run any of the programs he'd written he hadn't actually carried out
any testing or debugging. He'd never laid hands on a computer but
had written lots of programs in BASIC and Assembler after reading
books. He didn't see it as a problem as he was convinced that
there wouldn't be any bugs in anything he wrote because he had used
some very good books as reference!
Genuine question: Did he get the job?
No, but I did send him away with some advice that he should perhaps get
his hands on a home computer and at least try running some of his
programs. This was in the late '80s.
