Way too much WIP, add to that the effective environmental cost of having to manufacture store and reprocess all those surplus batteries.

Take that Tesla for example, they quote 220 miles range, but Top gear managed to completely drain one in about 55 miles at a test track.
Optimistically, let's say you get 2 hours real world driving from a single battery unit. With a 16 hour charge cycle, plus changeover time
you'll require 9 or 10 batteries per car for the system to work.
Given that the bulky heavy batteries are hideously expensive and will have to be continously recycled.

Add to that the extra demands on our electricity generation infrastructure which I reckon will need a major upgrade too.

Don't think it adds up.
