Isn't having good connecting flights to other parts of the globe one
of the main functions of an international airport? I'm not sure that
40 flights per day to Tenerife counts for much when it comes to this
consideration.

I'm not sure of your point there. I maybe being thick but the next 40+
flights from Gatwick as of is posting are all but a few short haul.
