Have you seen the price of solar panels for producing electricity?
Ho yuss, which is why you use a small one and trickle charge batteries
with it.
small ones are useless in the uk,
Depends on the application. If you want to do work then you need much
power and domestic solar electricity generation as the primary power
source begins to lose it's attraction. No reason why locally generated
electric can't be used to supplement the mains though.
makes me laugh when i see these adverts
for solar powered security lights with 'massive' solar panels measuring
about half a foot square.
What makes me laugh is the gross inefficiency of the lighting systems in
use in these applications, hardly the fault of the power source if 99%
is thrown away in heat or made into unwanted or inappropriately used
light.
they only make financial sense to me
There is no correlation between financial sense and the imagined needs
of a caravaneer.
but for a house, PV panels in this cuntry at least just arent really worth
it,
Again, it depends but the technologies are improving all the time and it
is really down to us to throw the naysaying out of the window and
instead start demanding that "someone do something about it."
One something in particular which springs to mind is the cost of those
devices that feed the national grid when not feeding the house. It needs
strong legislation from a gummint with real bollox to force the price of
this shit down to a level which shifts it from out of the set of those
things that are desirable by the voting classes and into one which
includes things which are both desirable and affordable.
This year I hope to get my battery recharge station up and running a
little more tidily than it is currently. At this point I should have
everything in my life that runs from batteries fully topped up free from
the Sun, even in the winter.[1]
Lighting is being looked at as being on the edge of economic but I think
it will need some of the newer ideas to be put into mass production
before I can afford them.
Power hungry devices are sadly probably right out of the question in my
lifetime, which is a bugger because I have many milliacres of south
facing roof.
[1] I still feel there is a huge gap in the domestic market for more
recoverable/regenerative energy systems but I currently lack the right
assistant with the right sort of motivation to make my self powered
vibrator concept anything more than a pipe dream.
