How do I do that?

I'm sure the default setup for gMail is IMAP, and you can change the
number of messsages displayed in preferences.

There doesn't seem to be anywhere to declare an account as IMAP. The
only occurrence of 'IMAP' I can see is in 'prefix' ...

Open the mail app and hit the top left button when you're in your
inbox:

Does the screen to the right look similar to what yours does? If it
does then you're on IMAP. If it doesn't then you're on POP for some
reason.

'Inbox
Drafts
Sent Messages
Trash
[Gmail]
Spam
Follow-ups
All Messages'

So all looks OK.

Set the account up properly through the wizards (Settings > Mail... >
New account)

If that still doesn't work then you've got IMAP off in Gmail for some
reason. On your computer go to gmail, then Settings at the top right
of the screen then to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP and towards the
bottom make sure IMAP access is set to ENABLED. Save the changes and
now set your iPhone's mail app up again.

Nah, IMAP's on, I'm sure of it. <fx: checks ...>

Yep .. http://coughlan.fr/gmail.jpg

I reckon it's the 'display last 200' messages that's causing the
problems. 'display' and 'download' seem to be interchangeable terms on
the iPhone.

And where do I get an MSN client ?

Palringo or IM+ Lite are free from the iTunes store.

Sorted, and installed. LOL .. oh this is fucking fun... chatting with
a former pupil... but this must be costing me a fortune...

I believe all iPhone's are sold on unlimited data tariffs for
GPRS/EDGE & 3G - they'd be useless without it.

Yeah, I've just checked. I have unlimited SMS for one year, for an euro
extra per month, too.

I see I can also pinpoint the location of photos with GPS .. *** _me_...

Your photos are geotagged when you take them by default.

<fx: giggles like a schoolgirl>

What other cool stuff can I do with this thing?

If you've got access to an Exchange server then the iPhone will do
push email/calendar/contacts instantly.

Nah, I don't, but maybe I'll waste a half hour today, setting up sivan
as an Exchange server ... and those grade averages for my brats have to
be done by tomorrow, too ...

Ah *** it ... they can wait. :-)

If you're on the current firmware then on Google maps you can get
Streetview, so put in a postcode like 90210 (Beverly Hills!) and take
a walk around.

That was a weird experience .. I was in the maps application and
double-tapped on the little 'drawing pin' above my flat and suddenly,
was looking at the front door of our block. I was like, 'what the --??'

You can also download your fave Podcasts on the fly throug the iTunes
music store (free).

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about my daily Torah podcasts. 'Must reactivate
them..

If your podcast is less than 10Mb then you can
grab it over the network. If it's bigger than 10Mb you can grab it
via WiFi. Also, any Podcasts/Apps/Music which you download/purchase
on the iPhone will be sync'd back to your computer then next time you
sync with iTunes.

Concerning WiFi, when I called Orange's customer services yesterday,
they confirmed that I had unlimited stuff, but then said that I had
'twenty hours of free WiFi'. I don't understand that: if I'm sitting in
a Starbucks or whatever, using their WiFi, then how can Orange charge me
for that? I'll need to call 'em back and get that clarified.

Apps I suggest you grab are the Facebook app (not sure if you're a
facebooker or not, but the app needs an update as it's not as reliable
since Apple released 2.2),

I had a Facebook account years ago, and then one of my fifth year girls
put some very _in_appropriate comments on my profile, so I closed the
account.

NetNewsWire so you can sync your RSS feeds,

I don't use RSS, even here on my Mac.

Dual Level (Use your iPhone as a spirit level),

Nah ..

Wikipanion (dedicated
Wikipedia app),

Got that already. :)

myLite (use your iPhone as a torch)

Got 'Flashlight', which does the same ***, I think.

and Units (convert
from stuff to other stuff). Those are all free apps.

Noted. I currently have this lot ...

http://coughlan.fr/apps.jpg

... and have synced Beethoven's five piano concertos to the iPod app.
Oh, tomorrow's ride to school is going to be fun ...

Oh, and to re-order the icons on your home screen press and hold one
of the icons for a few seconds, they'll start to giggle around and you
can then throw them around to your preferred order or move them to
another screen. When you've moved them just hit the Home button and
the process will stop.

Yep, got that.

If you get a call you don't want to answer ringing at you then hit the
Sleep/Wake button once to silence it and press it again to throw it to
voicemail (you have seen the iPhone's Visual Voicemail haven't you?!).

If you're using the iPhone's original earphones then you can play
start and stop music by pressing thick bit of plastic once (it's a
button). Double pressing it skips to the next track. Also, if you
get a call then the thick bit of plastic is also a microphone. Press
it once to answer the call and I think double pressing it ends the
call.

If you get a call while music is playing then the iPhone will fade the
music out then play the ringer. When the call ends the iPhone will
fade the music back in where you left off.

Yeah, that's rather class, I thought.

As the iPhone doesn't come with a manual I suggest you watch the
Guided Tour of the handset: http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/guidedtour/
- it lasts about 30 or 40 minutes but is really quite good as an
instructional video.

Google found me this ..

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iphone_user_guide.pdf

Oh, and to get the most out of the on-screen keyboard (I am heroic
with it now) you *must* watch
http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/features/keyboard.html#keyboardfeature
which explains how it all works and how to actually type. It's
corrective text, so you mash in the general direction of the key you
want instead of trying to hit exactly the right key.

Noted.

Thanks for the tips, dude.
