On the subject of books, I finished Engeleby (by Seb Faulks) the other
night. It was one of those books that leaves you with a slightly
unsettled, not-sure-if-I-really-liked-it sensation. It's very well
written, and something of a page-turner, but a bit 'odd'. Which I
suppose is at least a sign of originality. I'd be interested in what
you think when you read it.
I've just finished it too. I quite liked the way the entire book was
deconstructed from within, but I thought John Crace was absolutely bob
on with his list of faults:

That's overly harsh, imo, but then I didn't realise that 'the
unreliable narrator' was 'one of the laziest and most devalued devices
of modern literature'.
Where's Darsy when you need him?
It's a pretty old trick (I think Borges got the ball rolling with it).
I quite enjoyed Engleby (much more than I did Birdsong, for instance)
but it did have an overall feeling that Faulks sort of gave up trying
to structure it.
