Today is my 46th birthday.
It's also the day I went for a new x-ray on my femur, followed by a
chat with the consultant. The x-ray looks exactly the same as 6 weeks
ago i.e. there's still a 20~30mm gap between the bits of bone. So, I'm
going to be having another operation, involving removing the nail,
putting a reamer down the middle of the femur, taking a bone graft
from my hip, cutting my thing open and applying the graft, and
re-fitting a new nail. This should be some time in the next three
weeks.
As you can imagine, this isn't the best news I've ever had. Apparently
the operation has around an 80% success rate, which is not as high as
I'd like; if it doesn't work, we're onto external fixators, so let's
hope I get lucky this time.
Having been almost continually postive about this whole process, I'm
going to allow myself a day of sulking. It's my birthday, and I'll
sulk if I want to.
Aww that sucks mate, right on your birthday :-(
Chin up though, they can do amazing things with bones and fixings these days. Some of the things and replacements I've seen over my years in and out would boggle your brain. 80% means it's very very likely to be a complete success! If you were in a race and thought an overtake had an 80% chance of success you'd already be thinking about the next corner as you sycthed past the other guy down the inside :-)
Keep the smiles up! After ops it is so, so important to stay positive. It doesn't hurt as much when you're happy, and the happier and more positive you the harder you'll work on physio and stuff, which is all just win win win :-) Are you spending a lot of time alone at the moment? I just ask because, even though I have always been a very independant person, and have always liked plenty of time alone, in these situations it's always better IME to have friends/family round you as much as poss. They're always a sure fire cheer up or at least take your mind off it.
Take care mate and keep your chin up, I know how hard it can be some times, but it always pays off :-)
