Wish I'd never got the b loody thing. It's only taken four months to
get an unholy combination of O2 and Blackberry to admit there was
something wrong with it.

It was connecting, uncommanded, to blackberry.net, for some
inexplicable reason, and running up lots of very small charges in so
doing (like a couple of quids' worth a month). But when I went to
South America, those unasked-for connections got a bit pricier.

In addition, it was telling O2 it was connecting for unfeasible
amounts of time yet ringing up ridiculously small amounts of money for
the time taken. Like in May my bill said that on 6 May it made a
connection that lasted nearly 20 hours - yet the charge was just 41p.

Trying to get O2 to understand that something was wrong resulted in an
argument of epic proportions.

Me: "Look, check your copy of my bill. See the connection made on 12
May? According to the bill, I was logged on for 34 hours."

O2: "Yes, I can see that...."

Me: "And the charge was 70p."

O2: "Yes...."

Me: "Doesn't that strike you as rather odd?"

O2: "Why?"

Me: "The fact that such a huge connection time has resulted in such a
small amount of money."

<snip>

ICBW but as far as I recall you're billed for the amount of data transferred
not the time connected, so perhaps there was only a minor data transfer in
the 34 hour period?

I dunno. The issue is that it was connecting uncommanded, really.
