Just out of interest. How many long trips have you done with a TTR2 ?
And how much of your opinion is based on experience of earlier TT
products and heresay ?
I'll always recommend TT as I've used their products [1] without a
hitch to get me all over Europe for work and pleasure for years now,
but I don't comment on others like Garmin as I've never used any of
their products.
[1] - Tom Tom Go (Original) up until 4 months ago - then I tried a
couple of devices and settled with the Tom Tom Rider V2.
I've used many TT units and many Garmin units.
I prefer Garmin units. I use them in the plane, never let me down,
and I use them on the boat, again fantastic.
The databases in both the aviation and marine models can't be beaten.
Magellan tried but lost.
TT I believe, only make road based stuff, I could be wrong I don't
know, nor care, TBH, I wouldn't use one.
The rider I had was a bloody nightmare. It kept cutting out, losing
lock and on more (many more) than one occasion made a bid for freedom
whilst fitted to its unsubstantial mount. This was V1 of course, but
my personal experience has led me not to trust TT. I had a Go910 for
quite a while but found the mapping to be unreliable.
The GUI is great on the Go and so was the BT. Again, TBH the TT gui is
better, but that's lost as the mapping contains lots of silly errors.
Long trips; well, yep I've been around Texas (3500 miles) using my SP3
(Garmin) no problems. Spain, France, Channel Islands and many more
with the Zumo, again no problems.
The Rider didn't last long enough with me, as the supplier couldn't
supply a better mount, so I didn't trust it fitted. The Go910 came
round Texas with the SP3 (in a car with my mates boy driving) and had
a problem sorting the right roads. On more than one occasion trying
to send him across the border into Mexico (where no border crossing
was!) instead of just a few miles down the correct road to our
destination. We lost him completely in Fort Stockton where the same
hotel was listed, but the mapping on the Go was miles out. Personal
preferences make the world go round, but If I could take the GUI from
the TT and stick on the mapping and accuracy of the Garmin, that
would be one helluva winner ;o)
Heh, sounds like satnav heaven... now if only the hardware was standardised
and you could install the OS of your choice on it !
One of my mates had the TTRv1 for about two weeks before sending it back he
was so cheesed off with it.
I persuaded him to try the v2 and he's bought one and is dead chuffed with
it now.
Must admit I might of gone for the Zumo 550 last time I changed, but with
the TTRv2 being £100 notes cheaper I plumped with what I knew.
Shame places can't lend you one for a week to see how you get on with
different models.
