Sad about Alan Baker. I remember him well, especially in the early
1980s when he was a lone voice ranting about how noisy exhausts were

pipe' peddlers would have to clean up their act. He was so right.
There were some absolutely *awful* manufacturers about then. Anyone
else remember Jock Kerr and the Dynaflow brand? Or those hysterical
Piper three-into-one systems for two-troke triples?

I have to admit that I had a Jock Kerr system on (if I remember
correctly) an old CB250K4 and it was awful. It made loads of noise but
left a flat spot from about 4k up to about 1k short of the redline. In
other words it was rubbish.

I also made the elementary mistake of fitting a Piper 2-1 on my old
XS2 and the first thing it did was throw a load of sparks out of the
silencer as the wire wool packing burnt off...

The second thing it did was dig a big hole the first time I went round
a right hand bend reasonably fast and after that it was removed and
the old down tubes were put back on with Dunstall Decibel silencers
fitted. The Dunstalls threw a baffle through our garden shed after a
while so I just shortened it a bit, hack sawed the other one to match
and the problem was solved.
