consistently and accurately without having to rely on hearing what the engine
is doing or monitoring the counter.

Personally, I think a shift light is likely to be only very very
slightly easier to refer to than the rev counter. Especially if the
rev counter is mounted properly (with the 'normal range from around 10
o'clock to 2 o'clock).

Personally, I usually listen to the engine, and only look at the rev
counter on those straights where every last rpm is worth having.
