Never used (or even seen) a MiniDisc deck before but I've had a play and
I'm well impressed. Why didn't they catch on more - much better than the
portable CD players that did. [1]

Their downfall was the 'real time' recording (yes, I know some brands
did do a faster recording version, but it wasnt universal), and when the
iPod came out, their physical size in comparison.
I had a Sanyo for around 2 years, and thought it was great, though the
iPod nano that replaced it is a tenth of its size, and I cannot really
tell the difference in output between the pair.
