Got a laptop which I'm trying to fix. It freezes up x Secs after
booting into XP Pro.
It runs fine under safe mode, run under the normal system and it
crashes 20 seonds or more later
Any ideas ?
So does it freeze or crash? If it is freezing, how long have you
tried waiting? It could be that it is searching for a network
connection or suchlike and it might become usable again after a
while. I would try leaving it for at least 30 mins to see if it
resumes normal functioning. You might also want to try logging in as
adminstrator rather than your normal profile and see if it still has
the problem. If it boots in safe mode then try running hijackthis
to see what is loading at startup. I would
also suggest running chkdsk from a console window so that it runs
chkdsk at
the next startup. Also - can you roll back to a restore point?
Thanks all, this machine has been "wiped" by someone else. However was
giving the same problem. The boot logging advice seems the best so
far, but the rest also sensible.
If I boot in Safe, it doesn't freeze. The freeze in "normal mode" is
like a complete stop of the system. As it's been "wiped" I thought it
could be a hardware problem, then I saw the machine myself and am
fairly convinced it's a software/driver glitch.
I'm almost convinced to put a dual-boot into Xubuntu in the short
term for the friend. This works fine on a Live CD. But I also think
the machine has the "XP restore" built into a hidden partition. As
the user is a "windows user", I'm a little unconvinced in returning
it with Linux ;)
She's seriously been convinced the computer is dead and only browses
the internet/email/music/photos. In fact, is still on dial up.
Hmm ... what to do ...
When exactly does it freeze? At the welcome screen or some time after?
Does it consistently freeze at the same point during loading?
It's when the whole system is started up, just after where it pops up with "you've disabled the firewall", which I did. I've managed to get it to last longer by going into Windows Update, but it freezes mostly after about 30 seconds after settling down from the boot.
Bad memory is another likely candidate. Try running http://oca.microsoft.com/en/mtinst.exe (Boots from a CD)
