You're not mistaken.
You could see the ability to connect any drive as an advantage. Just
add whatever size you want, or what's cheap at the time. Easily
replaceable if the drive fails as well.
I got one of these because I already had 2 500Gb USB drives I wanted
to re-use. If you're starting from a clean slate, then maybe

might be a better bet, or
