Yep, some games are going the DirectX10 route, which is a vista

Thought so ... ok, so if I'm going to "upgrade" to Vista, the
purchase of a FOAD laptop is the time to do it I guess.

No it isn't. The MacBook Pro I've got is pretty much the same spec as
the best you can make on of those Alienwares (8600GT (256Mb) graphics
rather than the 8700GT). I put Vista Ultimate on it when I first got
it and was quite shocked by how slow it felt. I used it for about a
week and got hacked off and put XP Pro on. Now it flies along like I
expect a machine of this spec to do.

Unless something specifically requires Vista, stick with XP. Oh, and
the top of the range MacBook Pro is cheaper than the Alienware for the
same spec...

Heh, I used to think that until Ross bought a new laptop - £400 Sony
from Tescos wiht Vista Home Premium on it.

Fairly low range lappy, I expected Vista to run like a dog.

It runs very nicely, thankyou. With Aero and all the trimmings turned
on.

Fair suprised me it did.

Obviously with decent drivers for everything, Vista is happy on mid
range hardware, but said decent drivers are impossible to come by for
anything else but brand new kit :-(
