Cool. How do you actually use it then Beav? ie. Do you just run the
mains outside, the low voltage output of the Optimate or are all these
vehicles in a garage etc?
Bikes are in the garage, cars on the drive.
Hehe
Better than the usual way of things. Cars worth thousands on the drive and a
*** load of worthless crap locked safely away in the garage.
I run an extension lead under
the car and up into the engine bay, connect the Optimate and leave to
simmer
for a few days, then switch it back to one of the bikes.
Seems like a good plan. When I had one Optimate and several (10+)
batteries that could do with tending I was going to make a multiplexor
that switch between each battery in turn and moved on when it saw the
'charged' LED (not got roundtuit of course).
I got a multitasker for that. It's called "The Mark 2 Wife"
. It's pretty obvious
where the Optimate is too, coz there's an unfrozen circle on the bonnet
above where it sits, so I don't even have to open anything to see if the
optimate is still doing its thing.
And a bigger circle would indicate it was on fire?
Insewerence innit?
Hmmm. I guess the energy wasted running all these inefficient
incandescent lamps will be minimised when more lamps go over to LED?
I suppose there must be more energy consumed, but I also read in a Suzuki
manual that the alternator requires that the lights are on when the bike
is
running or one of the phases overheats.
So are the lights AC then do you know?
Not got a clue. I'd never profess to know ANYTHING about electrics because
they're a mystery to me.
On the Piaggio the lights are
driven via the battery so I guess just one of the many general loads
on the system.
Well the bikes lights are driven by the battery too. At least they stay on
if the engine is stopped by the kill switch. I think there's some sort of
solenoidy thing that switches the lights on only after the engine has been
started because they're not switched on simply by turning the ignition on.
Either that or some magical entity is alwats watching and switches the
lights on so I don't forget.
Could be total ***, but as my
older Kwak has a Mitsubishi alternator like by brother's Suzi [1] and
it's
never given any trouble, I.m concinced enough to run lights all the time.
Hmm, we haven't *always* run with lights on my R100RT or her XV750 so
it probably depends on make / model etc (or we have just been lucky
maybe).
I'm not very friendly with good luck. Bad luck seems to be the norm at
present. I even managed to break a fucking guitar string tonight ffs.
Like the adverts say .. look but not see .. :-(
And I doubt they ever will, so any ammo for the fight needs to be in OUR
guns.
I understand the goals but not sure riding with lights is always safer
is it?
Debatable, but the Eurocrats will have the full SP which they'll be sure to
let us in on soon enough. Then every moving thing on the planet will have
lights on 24 hours a day.
Like with all these speeds humps and the general misuse of
flashing headlights as a sign to 'come on' ?
Merry Christmas too :)
And you Beav. We have managed to escape most of it (no cards, tree,
fuckin disco on the front of the house) but I fear I'll get dragged
into some of it via my role as minicab for some of the older family
members. Oh well, there's normally a PC somewhere that needs some TLC
(I know how to live eh) ;-)
We'vew got the tree and we've done the cards thing. Visits next :-(
[1] Which fucks up regularly and he NEVER runs with lights, coz he's a
***.
Bless.
Our daughter was looking fondly at a new, black, CG125 up at our local
biker meet the other day. I quite like the silver ones and feel they
might just be a bit less invisible at night (especially if it's laying
in the road etc) :-(
Halogen or better lights. Fit a load of those blue "boy racer" LED's all
over it too and it'll look like TWO bikes so she may get lucky and the ***
who doesn't see her hits the other bike.
Oh, just remembered, I should have something interesting to do when
they are all watching Fools and Horses for the 29th time, should have
the new headsets by then.
I can sleep perfectly well without headsets.
Humbug!
All the best ..

p.s. Got the new battery for the Piaggio today and it's currently
(ouch) on the Optimate. I'll put it on tomorrow morning before we set
of (Scoot + car) to get those Autocom bits.
They'll do wonders for the battery :-)
