Am I missing something? I can't see the need to replace my Sky+, what
extra benefit do you get from a setup like yours? I don't want to record
anything to DVD which is about all I can see I'm missing. Disk capacity
isn't an issue for me either.

The main additional things I want in a PVR are:
1. Ability to record to DVD. I like collectting movies, and various
other stuff.
2. Lots of disk space - I'm on the limit with my current 'media'
partition of 160Gb (which is about 80 hours)

I've also got all my music on it (cos it plays back through my AV
amp), and am slowly getting all my digital photos on it too (I think
the a media PC with a big TV is *the* way to look at/show digital
photos).

Don't get me wrong, Sky+ is pretty good, and does 90% of what a PVR
should. But that other 10% is important to me.

Also, don't you have to pay extra for Sky+? Or is it free now?

It's "free" only in Sky terms. If you pay for a main package such as Sports or Movies it's not charged, if not you pay I think around a tenner a month (about the same price as one of the main packages).

We have a new Vista laptop in the house, and it was quite cool using media centre to display the photos on the TV, the downside being that over wireless it was very slow. I wish I could turn back time and rewire the house with cat5 when we moved in and started decorating, wireless in retrospect should have been an addition to the home network, not the basis for.

I'm reviewing my home cinema setup at the moment, as some of it is badly out of date and my amp is playing up, so I'll probably investigate a bit more thoroughly when the time comes - I'm leaving big blue in the next month, so hefting a wedge on home cinema won't be an option 'til Spring.
