burning fuel.

It shouldn't really make that much difference to fuel consumption.

Although the engine turns faster the energy required to do that speed
doesn't change so it uses a similar amount of fuel. The only difference will
be slightly higher mechanical losses at a higher speed but these are often
offset by better thermal efficiency.

I was going to make exactly the same point.

So the only point of an old fashioned car 'overdrive' was reduced noise in the cabin then?
