"Ban on rerun of eggs TV advert"
'British Egg Information Service spokesperson Amanda Cryer said: "We
have been shocked by this ruling as eggs are a healthy, natural food
which are recommended by nutritionists."
"What's more, there are no restrictions on the number of eggs people
can eat, which was recently confirmed by the Food Standards Agency,
and between five and seven eggs a week would be totally acceptable
for most people." '
That's not what my doctor or any of the high cholesterol information
sheets say.
Well, if "most people" have high cholesterol, then I see your point.
Most people over the age of 45 do - 70% of them. I don't know the
figure for the population as a whole, but as people under 30 are very
unlikely to have theirs tested, I'd say it's fairly likely that 'most
people' who are tested do indeed have high cholesterol.
The relationship between cholesterol and aterial/heart disease is much less
clear than many people realise. The relationship between diet and blood
cholesterol is also poorly understood. For example, despite being overweight
and having a diet high in all kinds of fats and oils (fried food, lots of
butter, cream, cheese, meat fat in bacon, sausages etc.) my cholesterol is
fine. OTOH I have known slim, fit people who eat a much "healthier" diet but
still have cholesterol higher than mine.
Eggs contain substantial amounts of cholesterol but they are unusual. Most
foods contain little or no cholesterol, most of your cholesterol is
manufactured in your body. There is no clear evidence that cholesterol is a
CAUSE of arterial/heart disease. There may be some association between the
two but that is not evidence of a causal relationship (there might be some
underlying common cause for both). AFAIK nobody can say with any certainty
how much difference lowering blood cholesterol makes to life expectancy (if
any). IMHO there is more bollocks talked about food and diet than there is
about any other health topic. It seems probable that the main issue isn't
what you eat - its how much. The relationship between obesity and risk of
heart disease is much more clearly established than the cholesterol
connection. I reckon if everbody ate what they felt like eating but just
ate LESS of it then it would produce far more improvement in health than all
these silly "healthy" diets.
