I'm thinking of buying another RS [1].

I've seen a minter with 5k on the clock, but the top fairing has a scratch
[2].

Chips Away will repair it for £120. Bearing in mind that this part of the
fairing takes a lot of punishment from insects, stones etc., I wonder
whether their repair would hold up in the long term.

In a word, no. Chips away is a "cheap" (and I use the word advisedly) method
of covering up faults and although the repair should be almost invisible,
the paint used will cause HUGE problems if ever you have to paint over it in
the future, but given the size of the mark, I'd probably give it a go
myself.

Chips away have a bad rep amongst painters 'round here... Their
repairs are ok-ish if you're not expecting too much, but they are a
cheaper alternative to the real thing... Persoinaly I wouldn't use
them...

The original paint is pretty hard wearing. Perhaps I should have it
resprayed properly, and baked or whatever?

If you want a mint bike forever, then it's the only way, but as I say, the
mark isn't big so the repair should be VERY "local" and not cause you any
real grief.

Ditto...

I tried Sudden Impact in Romford, who referred me to a BMW dealer, who
referred me to a car bodyshop - who weren't that keen on doing the job!

Car bodyshops usually aren't happy dealing with bikes. Why, I've no idea,
because we do both and I've yet to find any difference.

I think its to do with the plastics that some bike fairings are made
off... Some are dificult to work with, Ducatti's for instance...
That said, we have painted Ducatti panels with no problems, I painted
a Fazer and am currently prepping my sons R1 plastic bits ready to
paint next saturday... Black with holographic chips in it...

The FAQ lists paint shops in Coventry and Lincoln; can anyone recommend
someone in the Essex / Home Counties area? I don't mind a bit of a drive
to deliver / pick up.

Ping Owen, I think he lives/works around the deep south:)
